Despite being exhausted from my preceding journey, the first outing of my trip was to the underground city, the largest underground complex in the world. With mainly wet, warm summers and cold, snowy winters the climate of Montreal is varied and seasonal. Snowfall is abundant in winter and temperatures fall well below 0°C. With annual highs rarely exceeding 20°C, the underground city is the perfect escape. Relived to get away from the bitter weather, enhanced by icy winds, I descended below the roads of downtown Montreal into an extensive web of train stations, restaurants, department stores and hotels. Struck by the noisy and vibrant bustle of the city I immediately overcame my jet lag and hit the shops.
